Buckle up and drive sober this holiday weekend

Law enforcement agencies across the region are out in full force this Memorial Day weekend looking to stop and arrest anyone driving impaired.

Police will be using safety checkpoints in some cases to get drunk drivers off the roads and anyone who plans to consume alcohol at a gathering this weekend should pre-arrange a sober ride home.

Kentucky State Police and other agencies are also participating in the Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign. KSP says it includes highly visible enforcement and media messaging to ensure motorists are buckled up.

Just over 10,000 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants were killed in wrecks across the country in 2017 and 55 percent of those victims were killed at night.

Kentucky officials say 53 percent of the 725 people killed on roads in the commonwealth last year were not wearing a seat belt.
