Community honors veteran with no surviving family

Several dozen people from Hopkinsville, Fort Campbell and surrounding communities gathered at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West Friday morning to honor a local Vietnam War era veteran who recently died with no surviving family members.

Private First Class Stephen Shields of Hopkinsville died last Saturday at the age of 73 and while his folded flag had to be placed in an empty chair, Kimberly Ebeling says he leaves behind an entire nation grateful for his service.

She says Shields was well-liked by friends and she encouraged the community to frequently remember all veterans in their hearts and minds.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1913 joined men and women of Fort Campbell’s 101st Airborne Division in rendering final honors to Private First Class Shields.
