Owensboro official wants stronger laws in light of recent attack

An Owensboro high school athletic official is asking for stronger legal protections after recent attacks on referees. Brett Booker has written an email to state lawmakers requesting the first offense of official harassment or abuse be a felony.

Currently, first offense under Kentucky law is misdemeanor while a second offense is a low level felony. An AAU basketball coach from Michigan was accused earlier this month of beating a referee bloody during a game in Paducah.
