The Christian County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public about multiple scams in the community, including one where the scammers are posing as law enforcement officers.
Appearing on WHOP Friday, Public Information Officer Chris Miller says in the scam, the potential victim receives a call from someone posing as an officer either with CCSO or the Hopkinsville Police Department, who threatens them with jail time if they don’t pay a sum of money.
Miller says law enforcement agencies will never call you and request money or—as many scammers are fond of using—any type of payment that requires you to buy iTunes cards or other digital money.
He says the best course of action is to stop and think critically before giving into fear, and to never give personal or financial information out to anyone over the phone.
Miller urges people to also not be fooled by local numbers, because scammers have the technology to duplicate numbers, including those of people you know or law enforcement agencies, so be skeptical in all interactions.
