The Kiwanis Club of Hopkinsville got to learn more about what options and efforts are here in the community to help those struggling with substance abuse.
Howard Dixon is the owner and administrator for the Community Counseling Center in Hopkinsville, which is an outpatient substance abuse program that offers treatment to those dealing with issues caused by addiction. He says the program goes hand-in-hand with the Substance Abuse Program, or SAP, in the Christian County Jail, which is now one of the largest treatment providers in the state.
He says many people struggle with addiction, and even more are affected by a loved one who is an addict, whether that be to drugs or alcohol—which he calls a drug itself. He says millions of people need treatment in the U.S. and age 12 is the national average when people start experimenting with drugs.
Dixon says aside from personal complications, substance abuse also impacts communities in multiple ways, including the workforce.
Dixon says there’s no shame in seeking treatment and urges those struggling to never, ever give up the fight to take your life back, even if it seems like you may fail. For more information about the Community Counseling Center and what programs it offers, call 270-886-1515.
