After a lengthy renovation, the ribbon was finally cut Friday morning for the Sudden Service Station located in downtown Hopkinsville, which will serve as a public restroom.
The inner portion of the building has been completely remodeled, which is the result of many volunteers and multiple agencies and organizations. Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks says not only will it serve as public restrooms for both Peace Park and Virginia Street Park, it will also eventually and appropriately serve as the city’s first charging station for electric vehicles.
Peg Hayes with the Local Development Corporation says the community’s input is what led to the renovation, to help meet a need downtown.
The Sudden Service Station was originally on the northeast corner of 12th and Main Streets in 1919. It was moved in 1935, with its brick veneer intact, to its present site. It was then operated by Meador Bros until 1978. The S.O.S. Shop operated by University Heights Academy, was one of the last occupants of the building. The Local Development Corporation acquired the property in 2008.
