Freezing rain causes some power outages overnight

Western Kentucky was upgraded to a winter storm warning last night and a mixture of mostly freezing rain and sleet caused a few power outages in the area.

The precipitation has come to an end and no warnings are advisories are currently in effect.

There were still about 900 Pennyrile Electric members in Trigg County without power as of about 5 a.m. and crews had been out through the night working to restore service. That number had been as high as about 1,100.

ECC reported there was a power outage on the west side of Hopkinsville early this morning, but it was restored quickly.

In Marshall County, US 62 was temporarily closed overnight near Kentucky Dam Village State Park by downed power lines.

Dispatchers in Christian, Todd and Trigg counties reported no significant problems with weather-related traffic accidents overnight. Christian County Sheriff’s Deputy Andy Sanderson says city streets are mostly wet, but many roads out in the county are slick and hazardous. He says the Parkway is slick in areas—especially as you get north of the 14 mile-marker. There is a thin layer of ice on bridges along I-24. Road crews from the city, county and state have been at work through the night.

Slow down and use additional caution if traveling this morning.

The ice in the trees will be short-lived, as the high temperature today should reach the upper 30’s or lower 40’s this afternoon.
