Section of US 79 dedicated in honor of fallen 101st, Todd County soldier

A five-mile stretch of US 79 in Todd County was dedicated as the Sgt. William M. Bays Memorial Highway Saturday morning to permanently honor the Fort Campbell soldier and Allensville resident who was killed in June of 2017 in Afghanistan.

State Senator Whitney Westerfield noted that like all of our military, Sgt. Bays chose to defend his country knowing it may one day cost him his life.

Representative Jason Petrie sponsored the legislation that allowed the dedication of the stretch of roadway and he choked back tears as he noted the sacrifice of not only Sgt. Bays—but also his wife Jasmin and three daughters who were in attendance.

Jasmin Bays thanked the Todd County community for its continued support through her family’s loss.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has already erected one of the signs and a second will go up soon. William Trousdale read a congressional proclamation that was delivered on the House floor by Congressman James Comer.

The ceremony was held at Nutrien Ag Solutions at the intersection with KY 102—just north of the sign that’s already visible to motorists heading south toward Guthrie.
