The Food and Drug Administration is considering a new rule that would place restrictions on the sale and distribution of flavored tobacco products and two area state lawmakers believe the proposal would do harm to local farmers.
Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says it would hurt dark-fired tobacco farmers most and they are already facing adversity from many other directions.
Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville was contacted by Altria—the parent company of U.S. Tobacco—and they believe the restrictions will be bad for business and local farmers.
Thomas’ resolution during last year’s session opposed the FDA placing a standard on nicotine levels in smokeless tobacco.
