The Arizona Diamondbacks crushed the Cincinnati Reds 12-5 in the opener of a three-game series at Chase Field. Homer Bailey was rocked for eight runs, six earned, in four-plus frames as he dropped to 1-and-7. Adam Duvall drove in four runs for Cincinnati. The teams play again this evening.
Elsewhere in the National League: The St. Louis Cardinals fell behind 4-0 in the fourth inning and never recovered in an 8-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Game two of the series is tonight at Miller Park.
Mike Montgomery and four relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-0. The series continues tonight at PNC Park.
Charlie Culberson connected for a two-run, pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Atlanta Braves a 4-3 win over the New York Mets in the first of a day-night doubleheader. The Mets won the nightcap 8-5. The teams play again at Sun Trust Park this evening.
