April declared Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

April is Sexual Assault and Prevention Month and new Sanctuary, Inc. Executive Director Heather Lancaster presented a proclamation at Monday’s Pennyrile Area Development District Board of Director’s meeting.

Lancaster says one out of three women and one of every six men will be sexually assaulted at least once in their life time and too many incidents will go unreported.

She says that change doesn’t have to be a movement, as it begins with changing the culture around you, such as discouraging jokes that normalize sexual assault and educating children on dangers.

County-Judge Executives in Christian, Trigg and surrounding counties all signed the proclamation, which declares April as Awareness Month. There will be several events people can participate in to show their support for victims, including Chalk the Walk Day on 11, where people can write heartfelt messages on their street’s sidewalk.

There will also be Denim Day on April 25, where everyone is encouraged to wearing blue jeans to bring attention to the cause.
