The Christian County Colonels’ offense was stymied by McCracken County’s Caden Kern in a 5-0 loss to the No.4-ranked Mustangs Tuesday night in a high school baseball game.
Kern, a left-hander headed to John A. Logan after high school, tossed a complete-game three-hitter on 88 pitches. He only allowed one Colonels’ runner after the second inning, retiring the final 11 Christian County batters in the game. The senior struck out eight and did not allow a walk.
Gage Montes and Blake Boehman had singles in the opening frame, but Montes was caught stealing and Kern got a strikeout to end the threat.
Gavin Mitchell slammed a double to open up the second inning, but was left stranded after three straight outs.
McCracken got all the runs it would need in the first inning as Kern led off with a single and scored on a single by Gage Reeves. Reeves made it 2-0 on a double by Will Fox.
The Mustangs increased their lead to 3-0 in the second inning as Luke Whiteside was hit by a pitch to lead off and moved to second base on a passed ball. Brady Thompson brought him to the plate on a single.
McCracken made it 5-0 in the fourth inning as Brian Hall singled and scored on a double by Whiteside. Brady Thompson had a sacrifice fly.
Andrew Mayes started the game for the Colonels and went two innings. He was relieved by Eddie Davis, who also pitched two innings. Sebastian Dazey pitched the final three frames and held the Mustangs to only two hits.
Christian County slipped to 18-14 on the season and is scheduled to play host to Trigg County at 6 p.m. Thursday. It is Senior Night for the Colonels and it also will be the final home game in the Colonels’ history. Airtime is at 5:45 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm and 953thefarm.com.
