As Black History Month comes to a close, the Modernette Civic Club of Hopkinsville is inviting the community to its 30th annual African American Heritage Breakfast this weekend.
The club was founded in 1965 as a social bridge club, but it later evolved into a civic club that now provides academic scholarships for local students and supports various nonprofits.
Club member Lisa Lewis Balboa recently appeared on WHOP and shared that Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Pamela Goodwine will be the guest speaker. Goodwine was elected in November 2024 to serve as the justice representing the Supreme Court’s fifth district.
Goodwine is the first Black woman and the fifth Supreme Court justice to serve at all four levels of the judiciary in Kentucky. Balboa says the breakfast will also include a musical performance by Donari Merritt, a Hopkinsville native who is studying music at Western Kentucky State University.
Not only is the breakfast a time for the club to celebrate Black history and culture, but Balboa says it is also a chance for the club raise funds for academic scholarships.
The breakfast is set for 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Bruce Convention Center. Tickets cost $35 and are still available at eventrite.com, and Balboa encourages attendees to wear their African attire.
