Better Business Bureau warns of possible winter recovery scam services

As citizens continue to recover after Winter Storm Fern dropped snow and ice across the region, the Better Business Bureau is urging folks to be on high alert for potential scams.

According to a news release, tree removal, HVAC repairs and plumbing services are the most common repair needs following an ice storm, which means scammers often look to take advantage of those who are needing those services.

Scammers may go door-to-door offering immediate tree removal services, often demanding full payment upfront. In some cases, they lack proper equipment, insurance, or experience—putting homeowners and property at risk. Others may take payment and never return. Scammers could also claim that your furnace or heat pump needs immediate replacement rather than repair. Some use high-pressure tactics, inflate prices, or install used or substandard equipment without warranties.

Officials say requests for cash-only payments in full, up front, are a common red flag.

They’re recommended to not rush into a decision and take the time to verify a contractor is legitimate. Be wary of door-to-door solicitations, check those credentials, get multiple written estimates, avoid large upfront payments and absolutely get everything in writing.
