LG&E and KU encourage customers to reduce energy consumption during cold snap

As the icy temperatures show no sign of leaving soon, Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities is asking customers to reduce their energy use.

LG&E and KU serves 77 Kentucky counties including portions of northern Christian County.

LG&E and KU Vice President of Customer Services Shannon Montgomery says since heating systems are working overtime; they are encouraging customers to conserve energy and lessen the strain on the regional electricity grid.

The utility service is asking folks to consider the following energy conservation tips:

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances.
  • Adjust the thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting.
  • Reduce reliance on other heating sources.
  • Wear extra layers and add extra blankets to beds.
  • Close fireplace dampers.
  • Use draft stoppers for windows and doors.
  • Run dishwashers, dryers and washing machines only when full.
  • Open curtains or blinds in the daytime to let the sun’s heat in and close them at night to retain the heat.
  • Ensure air registers are not blocked.
  • Use a microwave oven or a slow cooker or prepare cold meals. Microwaves use less than half the power of a conventional oven.
