It took a gritty performance, but the Christian County Colonels’ wrestling team got a pair of late wins and defeated visiting Ohio County 38-34 Friday night in the Section 1 Duals at Lyle Dunbar Gym.
The Colonels trailed visiting Ohio County 34-26 when Cayden Hayden faced off against Johnnie Logsdon at 215 pounds. What already was known was the Colonels were getting six points in the final match because the Eagles were forfeiting to the Colonels’ Treshawn Crenshaw.
Hayden, with the Colonels cheering him on mat side, pinned Logsdon in the first period which earned his team six points and helped send Christian County to the match victory.
“I can’t say enough about our guys,” Christian County Head Coach Dee Leavell said after the match. “Marquis Hart at 138, Brodie at 175 and Cayden at 215, those were three matches we needed and they went out and got them.”
Christian County led 18-12 when Hart earned a 10-4 decision over Mason Taylor.
Ohio County earned a pin at 144 pounds to tie the match at 18. However, the Colonels’ Dane Miller scored an 18-3 technical foul win over Kaden Coy at 150 pounds to push the Colonels’ lead to 23-18.
The Eagles won the next two matches to grab a 28-23 advantage.
Another key win for the Colonels came at 175 pounds. Brodie Smith earned three points for the Colonels with a 7-5 decision over Asher Mason. Smith was trailing with 15 seconds left, but made a late move that resulted in four points and the win.
The Eagles came back with a pin at 190 and led 34-26 and set up the dramatic finish.
“Ohio County came to wrestle and our guys just stepped up,” Leavell said.
Christian County advances to the state duals next weekend in Corbin. Leavell said the Colonels would find out their opponent next week.
