Tigers escape Lawrence Co. in 2 OT, face Cooper today

Jonovan Leavell’s four-point play with 2.4 seconds left lifted the Hopkinsville Tigers to a 91-90, double-overtime win over defending Region 15 champion Lawrence County Sunday afternoon in the Ashland Invitational Tournament.

Hopkinsville led by 12 points in the second half only to see the Bulldogs rally to tie the game and get several close looks at the basket at the regulation buzzer.

Lawrence County also had several close attempts at the first overtime buzzer.

In the second overtime, the Bulldogs led 90-87 as the seconds ticked away. Leavell launched a desperation 3-pointer that went in and Leavell was fouled on the play. The sophomore coolly sank the free throw with 2.4 seconds left for the win.

Jayvon Battle led the Tigers with 24 points. Jayon Bass added 17 points, followed by 16 for James Bradley Jr., 15 for Leavell, and 12 for Tayshawn Quarles.

The Tigers dropped a hard-fought 75-60 game on Saturday against Jeffersontown. Jayon Bass had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Hoptown.

Hopkinsville, which is now 6-6 on the year, is scheduled to play Cooper today at 4 p.m. in the fifth-place game.
