After a weekend of shopping, Giving Tuesday looks to support non-profits and those in need

Black Friday may get the shopping season started, and Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday will help get Christmas shopping well underway, but the season’s spirit of generosity has a chance to shine on Tuesday.

Also known as Giving Tuesday, the day is an annual global day of generosity that hopes to encourage people to give back to their communities through charitable acts. And there are numerous local agencies and initiatives that are worthy of the cause, including through the United Way of the Pennyrile.

The United Way of the Pennyrile helps support 16 partner agencies in Christian, Todd and Trigg Counties, including the Aaron McNeil House, American Red Cross, Armed Services YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club of Hopkinsville, the Christian County Literacy Council, Christian County Rescue Team, Christian County Youth Service Advisory Board, the Dyslexia Association of the Pennyrile, Hopkinsville Family YMCA, Kentucky Legal Aid, PACS-Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, PACS-Home Delivered Meals, the Pennyrile Children’s Advocacy Center, the Salvation Army of Hopkinsville, Sanctuary, Inc. and Trace Industries.

Speaking with WHOP recently, Martha Steil with the United Way encouraged those looking for a charitable cause this Giving Tuesday to consider donating to the United Way, as they’re looking to raise $715,000 before their fundraising campaign comes to an end.

She says their 16 partner agencies impact people right here in our community, and the United Way does what they can to give them the support they need.

Individuals can go by the United Way office at 1110 South Main Street in Hopkinsville or donate on their website, pennyrileunitedway.org.
