The Hopkinsville Lady Tigers hung on by the tip of their claws Saturday and edged out Union County for a trip to the KHSAA Class 2-A State Cross Country Meet this weekend in Lexington.
Lauren Mayes finished runner-up and teammate Alexis Herrera-Lovato was seventh overall to lead the Lady Tigers to a fourth-place finish in the Class 2-A, Region 1 Cross Country Meet Saturday at Logan County High School.
Mayes crossed the finish line in 20:14 and Herrera-Lovato finished in 21:36. Both runners made First-Team All-Region.
Helping power the Lady Tigers’ state meet run were Kaydon Coats, who ran 26th in a time of 24:31 and Evelyn Bangart (31st, 26:17), Amereh Acree (36th, 27:15), and Luanna Acree (40th, 29:18).
The Lady Tigers edged out Union County by three points for the final team spot at this weekend’s state meet at the Lexington Horse Park. It is the third year in a row that the Lady Tigers advanced to the state meet.
Meanwhile, two Hopkinsville boys’ runners advanced to the state meet.
Tyson Cavinder finished seventh overall with a time of 17:45 and Savior Davis was 11th overall with a time of 18:24.
Both Cavinder and Davis earned All-Region Second Team honors.
The Tigers finished eighth in the team standings.
Others representing Hopkinsville included Levi Johnston (44th, 20:47), Fernando Ginez-Rojas (50th, 21:54), and Jesus Tomas (54th, 26:03).
