The Fort Campbell Lady Falcons weren’t sure they would be able to play in the Girls’ District 8 Soccer Tournament until Monday morning. Once there, they took advantage of their opportunity and upset Hopkinsville 5-0 in the second semifinal contest and advance to their first District 8 Tournament championship since 2014.
Avery Katz scored two goals in the opening four minutes of the match and put the second seed Lady Tigers (10-9-1) on their heels.
While Hoptown didn’t give up many more chances after the first 10 minutes of the half, the Lady Tigers weren’t generating much offense either.
After a spirited halftime talk to his team from Lady Tigers’ coach Jeff Addison, Hoptown threatened early in the second half but missed on a couple of chances.
However, Alexa Aubuchon didn’t miss her opportunity and found the back of the net to push the Lady Falcons’ lead to 3-0 with 37:26 remaining.
The goal seemed to break the back of the Lady Tigers, who had won four straight matches entering the tournament. The Lady Falcons road the momentum to two more second half goals to grab the win.
Fort Campbell improved to 7-7 on the season and will face University Heights Academy in Wednesday’s 6 p.m. championship match. The Lady Blazers defeated the Lady Falcons 9-1 and 8-0 earlier this season.
For Hopkinsville, it was the final girls’ soccer match in school history as it will consolidate with Christian County next fall.
The Lady Falcons also broke a five-match losing streak to the Lady Tigers dating back to 2022.
