The Mayfield Cardinals flexed their muscles in all phases of the game as they crushed the Christian County Colonels 55-0 Friday night in a high school football game at the Stadium of Champions.
The Cardinals’ Josiah England ran the opening kickoff back 80 yards for a touchdown and added a 35-yard scoring run in the opening quarter to set the tone.
Mayfield led 21-0 at the end of the first after a 4-yard scoring run from JaAubrey Sherrill.
The Cardinals (2-0) scored on the kickoff return, a punt return and an interception return as they built a 42-0 halftime lead and began the running clock with 7:33 to go in the first half.
Christian County (0-2) started the second half turning the ball over on downs inside its own 35-yard line and the Cardinals only needed two plays as Malik Kirby hit Ashton Flint on a 25-yard scoring pass to make it 48-0. Kirby had an impressive night as he scored on a 35-yard punt return, 74-yard interception return, and tossed for a score.
Christian County’s closest opportunity to score came early in the fourth quarter when it advanced the ball to the Cardinals’ 1-yard line. However, a fumble was recovered in the end zone and three plays later Sawyer Stinson threw a 77-yard scoring pass to Anderson Smith to run the score to 55-0.
Christian County had six turnovers on the night and has committed 13 in the first two games of 2025.
The Colonels’ DeAsian Harris finished the night with 74 yards rushing on 18 carries. Freshman quarterback Mason Cansler went 7-for-16 with two interceptions and 58 yards.
The Colonels finished with 156 total yards of offense with 78 rushing and 78 passing. Meanwhile, Mayfield went for 290 total yards mostly on a short field.
It was the final time that the Christian County Colonels and Mayfield will meet on the football field with the Cardinals leading the all-time series 9-4. Christian County will consolidate with Hopkinsville High School for the 2026 football season. The last time that Christian County beat Mayfield in football was 1988.
Christian County, which has now lost six straight games dating back to 2024, returns to action Sept. 5 at home against McKenzie, Tenn. The newest CCHS Athletic Hall of Fame Class will be introduced before the game and the jerseys of Anthony Hickey Jr. and Griffin Joiner will be retired during a ceremony at halftime.
