Local education board receives school construction update, acquires easement

Christian County School Board Members received facility construction and renovation updates and voted to acquire an easement to improve part of a road at their Thursday meeting.

The construction of the consolidated Christian County High School continues on schedule, and Kevin Hitchell from Alliance Corporation says the main gymnasium’s roofing was recently installed. The school’s art, music and choir areas are awaiting roofing.

The board approved five construction change orders, resulting in the high school’s price tag decreasing by around $82,800. The change orders concern exterior light revisions, band room instrument storage revisions, the deletion of a sliding grille and parking lot revisions.

The high school is set to open at the start of the 2026-27 school year.

Martin Luther King Jr. Early Learning Center is set to undergo renovations to internally expand the school and create more classrooms. The expansion is set to cost around $400,000 and will be funded by a partnership between Jennie Stuart Health and the school district.

Superintendent Chris Bentzel says by October 1, the early learning center is set to have seven more classrooms open up.

Following the meeting, the school board then hosted a special District Finance Corporation meeting to vote on a resolution. District Finance Director Jessica Darnell says the resolution is for the temporary transfer of an easement that includes a portion of Lafayette Road near Jerry Claybourne Way.

The easement is around 23 acres, and work is set to be done to make the roadway safer for travelers. Once the consolidated high school opens, Lafayette Road is likely to experience an increase in daily traffic.
