To reduce the amount of vehicle accidents involving low bridges, Kentucky is joining the new bridge height awareness campaign, “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right.”
The campaign kicked off on Tuesday and runs through Saturday, and it encourages drivers to find out the height of their vehicles to know what bridges they can safely pass under to avoid any road or vehicle damages.
Governor Andy Beshear says along with buckling up, following speed limits and eliminating distractions behind the wheel, knowing your vehicle’s height is an important step in staying safe on the road. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray encourages drivers to comply with bridge height signs and to not solely rely on information form navigation apps.
The campaign also encourages drivers to measure the height of any equipment they are hauling and ensure truck beds are lowered and equipment is stowed properly. Kentucky has around 180 bridges with a vertical clearance lower than 14 feet which could impact vehicles.
