Christian Co. Animal Shelter sees high number of intakes, looks for community help

There was a lot to be discussed at Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Christian Fiscal Court, and at the top of that list was the Christian County Regional Animal Shelter, who are at maximum capacity.

The animal shelter accepts animals from Christian, Todd, and Trigg officially, though they won’t turn away animals that are brought in by individuals. Presenting her monthly report to Fiscal Court Tuesday, Director Melissa Goff says June was a rough month—they saw 499 animals come in and only 210 were outgoing, either through adoption or rescues, making for a shelter that’s full to bursting.

In an online plea earlier in July, shelter staff asked for people to hold off on bringing in animals for surrender unless absolutely necessary until they were able to get more pets in home. Goff made an additional plea at Fiscal Court—getting your pets spayed or neutered can help cut down on the unwanted pet population and reduce the number of animals coming into the shelter.

The summer months are the notorious ‘kitten season’, and you can see that when you first walk into the lobby at the facility on Russellville Road. Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam says they’re doing what they can to get animals spayed or neutered before they are adopted out, including transporting animals back and forth to Butler County weekly for a low cost clinic.

The Animal Shelter is roughly 250 animals ahead of last year’s pace at comparing June of 2025 to June of 2024. Goff says they have plenty of great animals ready to go home right now, so if you’ve been thinking of adopting a new pet, now might be a good time to do so.

She says the Butler County Animal Shelter and Montgomery County Humane Society are conducting low cast spay and neutering, and information on how you can take advantage of that service can be found on the Christian County Animal Shelter Facebook page.

Magistrates approved an application to the Department of Agriculture for a spay and neuter grant in the amount of $1,266.
