Scorching heat settles into the region, with little chances for rain

If you’ve wondered what it’s like to be a plant in a greenhouse, then you might just get your chance this week, with ongoing Heat Advisories and extremely high humidity.

For the first time in a good while, our chances for rain are very nearly non-existent, and while they might be a good thing for those still struggling with heavy rain that resulted in flooding issues across the region, it’s not so good for our heat.

Meteorologist Sean Poulos with the National Weather Service in Paducah says a strong ‘heat ridge’ is settling in, which will keep the rain away for a few days but make way for really hot temperatures and uncomfortably high humidity.

There is already a Heat Advisory in places for Christian, Todd and Trigg counties until at least Thursday evening, with areas to our west under an Extreme Heat Warning. Poulos says our rain chances return Thursday, but the best chances will arrive just in time for the weekend.

The dew points—which measures the moisture in the atmosphere—have been unusually high this year for an extended amount of time. In fact, Poulos says we’re on track to break our record if we continue to reach a dew point of 73 for another week.

The 8-to-14 day outlook doesn’t look much different, with above average temperatures in store and near normal amounts of precipitation—so summer lovers, enjoy.
