A Hopkinsville man is facing felony charges after a dog died in a hot car on Hayes Street Tuesday.
According to the Hopkinsville Police Department report, Animal Control responded to Moores Court for a call for help about a dog stuck in a hot vehicle that was unresponsive. The dog would later die due to being overheated and being left in the vehicle for too long.
Investigation revealed a video that reportedly showed a male suspect—later identified as 38-year-old Antonio Attaway of Hopkinsville—walk up to the vehicle around 5:30 a.m. and put the dog inside the car.
Attaway reportedly told officers that a friend had left the dog in the car so a friend could pick it up due to him not wanting to keep the dog, and he was able to identify the canine. He also told officers the dog did not belong to him and it had been dropped off at his house without his knowledge.
Attaway is charged with torture of a dog or cat—a felony—and second-degree cruelty to animals.
