Local AKA Chapter invites community to Mental Health Awareness Conference

To spotlight the mental health of caregivers, the Beta Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Inc. is hosting its third annual Mental Health Awareness Conference on June 14.

Chapter President Marcia Johnson says mental health awareness is one of the initiatives of their sorority’s international president and they decided to locally promote awareness. By hosting the conference Johnson hopes to normalize conversations about mental health and share resources.

Johnson says the theme of this year’s conference is “Care for the Caregiver.” Being a caregiver to someone can be a hefty responsibility and Johnson says the health needs of caregivers can often be put on the back burner.

While spotlighting caregivers, Johnson says there will be activities and panels for the kids and adults. The conference will include a women’s session hosted by Dr. Georgia Ellis; a men’s session hosted by John W. Childress; a community resource session and a children’s workshop.

The conference is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 14 at Mount Olive Baptist Church. The conference is free and those interested in attending can register here. At the conference, the chapter will also be accepting donations of nonperishable foods to support local families facing food insecurity.
