Comfortable weather brings big turnout to Take Kids Fishing Day

It seems that the cooler temperatures and the fact no rain actually fell in the morning make for some bumper Take Kids Fishing events, as Jeffers’ Bend Environmental Center was packed Saturday.

This was the 24th Take Kids Fishing Day event held at the center off of Metcalfe Lane, and the turnout was tremendous, with Charles Turner with Jeffers Bend saying it was one of their biggest crowds in years, full of kids playing water games and fishing with their families.

There were even a couple of contenders for Big Jeff—an over-large catfish that calls those waters home—but he wasn’t sure if the fish of the hour was caught. He says there’s probably a couple of Big Jeffs still swimming about in there, and folks have pulled some absolutely huge catfish in the past.

Turner says they host Take Kids Fishing not just as a way to bring families together in a fun way, but also to get kids who may not normally have the chance to do something like fishing and give them some good memories.

And kids were definitely fishing, with everyone catching a little something, and some folks even reeling in upwards into the double digits. There were also water slides, a water line fixing station and a water obstacles course.

With Take Kids Fishing Day wrapped up, Jeffers Bend will be closed to the public for the rest of Memorial Day weekend, with a special event taking place, but it will be back open to regular business on Tuesday morning.
