Christian County Head Start has been educating some of the community’s youngest learners for 60 years and on Friday local officials joined educators to celebrate the milestone.
The Audubon Area Head Start program oversees early childhood education centers in 16 counties across western Kentucky serving over 2,500 children, including around 250 kiddos in Christian County. Head Start Director Brad Wright says early childhood education is one of the most important investments they can make to give children a solid foundation for a bright future.
Along with focusing on education, Wright says they also provide family services, nutritional programs and health support.
Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight and Christian County Magistrate Rich Liebe read a proclamation spotlighting the milestone. Knight recognized the Head Start staff for their dedication to helping children develop skills in order to succeed in the future, regardless of their social or economic background.
During his time as a police officer, Liebe says he visited Head Start a few times to spotlight his work and says it was always a great time to see children excited about the duties of law enforcement.
Attendees also got a special surprise, some of the Head Start students recognized the 60th anniversary by singing happy birthday.
To conclude the celebration, staff hosted a ribbon cutting to recognize Head Start’s continued commitment to education local youth.
