Police arrest Hopkinsville man for stealing out of vehicles, fleeing

Hopkinsville Police arrested 20-year-old Jaquan McPhatter of Hopkinsville after he reportedly stole from vehicles and was seen walking around with a handgun on Thursday.

Officers were dispatched to Abbey Way for reports of a person attempting to break into vehicles. While responding to the scene, officers received information that there was a man carrying a shotgun matching the suspect’s description in the area of the Bruce Convention Center.

Police attempted to make contact with the suspect, later identified as McPhatter, but he fled away on foot. McPhatter was apprehended in front of the Hopkinsville Sportsplex and reportedly had a shotgun and a handgun on his person which were both stolen. The handgun was reportedly taken from a vehicle parked at the Holiday Inn Express.

McPhatter also reportedly stole personal property out of a vehicle on Abbey Way. The stolen items were returned to the victim.

McPhatter was charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police, theft by unlawful taking, theft of a firearm and additional charges are pending.
