Crutchfield coaches Omaha to NCAA Tournament

Former Hopkinsville High School basketball player Chris Crutchfield coached the Omaha Mavericks to the Summit League tournament championship Sunday night.

The Mavericks defeated St. Thomas 85-75 to earn a ticket to next weekend’s NCAA Division 1 Basketball Tournament.

Crutchfield was hired to coach Omaha in 2022 after previously serving as an assistant coach at Oregon. He is a 1987 graduate of Hopkinsville High School and was part of the Tigers’ 1985 state championship team.

Following his high school graduation, Crutchfield went on to play football and basketball at Omaha. He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1992 followed by his master’s degree in health, physical education and administration in 1996.

Crutchfield also has previously served as an assistant coach at Arkansas, Oklahoma, TCU, Oral Roberts, and New Mexico State.

This year’s Omaha team won a program record 22 games against 12 losses.

The Mavericks will find out their tournament opponent this Sunday around 5 p.m.
