Guilty plea entered in fatal overdose case

The woman charged in connection with a fatal overdose entered a guilty plea in the Christian Circuit Courtroom of Judge John Atkins Thursday morning.

Debbie Elliot appeared alongside public defender Doug Moore and Commonwealth’s Attorney Maureen Leamy, who detailed the charges Elliot was pleading guilty to—that being complicity to trafficking in methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance, with the second-degree manslaughter charge that she was originally charged with dismissed.

It comes with a recommended sentence of five years, and with credit given for time served, Elliot would be almost immediately eligible for parole. Moore clarified what circumstances behind Elliot’s plea.

Moore also requested that Elliot be released from custody pending sentencing, with the Commonwealth opposed, but the judge ruled to release her on her own recognizance.

Elliot was charged in connection to the overdose that led to the death of Gladys Henry in December, where she was found deceased at a home on West 20th Street.

Final sentencing is set for April 9.
