Heavy rain results in flooded roadways with more on the way

As heavy rain moves across the region, western Kentucky is under the gun for major flooding Saturday into Sunday morning.

Numerous roads across Christian, Todd and Trigg counties are underwater, and those waters are only expected to rise over the next several hours. A home in Guthrie on First Street had to be evacuated, with no injuries reported and a rock slide near the 87-mile-marker of I-69 in Hopkins County has shutdown the roadway.

Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham says water is across more roads than they can keep up with as of about noon, and Buffalo Road between Christian and Trigg Counties will likely be shut down due to dangerous flood waters. He is urging folks to stay home and not go unless you absolutely must, and never drive through flooded roadways.

You may think your vehicle can handle it, but flood waters often hide the fact that the road beneath them has been washed out and may not be there at all, meaning vehicles can become stuck, and thanks to rapidly moving water, the situation can become very dangerous, very quickly.

The National Weather Service in Paducah says some areas in western Kentucky could even experience catastrophic flooding, so make sure you have a plan in place in the event you need to quickly evacuate due to flood waters.

A Flash Flood Warning remains in place until 6 p.m. tonight, and it could be extended, if needed.
