TVA spotlights energy efficiency resources ahead of winter

As temperatures decrease, energy demands rise and Tim Hughes with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) attended Thursday’s Lunch and Learn Program hosted by the Trigg County Chamber of Commerce to share energy conservation tips.

Hughes works with the TVA’s Energy Right Program which focuses on helping customers reduce their energy consumption by offering incentives and rebates to get HVAC tune ups, window replacements, air sealing and much more.

Hughes says they are focused on energy conservation because the population in TVA’s service region is seeing unprecedented growth. If energy is consumed efficiently then it’ll be easier for the TVA to fulfill power demands.

In January, Hughes says the TVA reached an all-time power production peak, surpassing its previous peak by around 1,000 megawatts. The last peak was reached in 2007, and Hughes doesn’t expect 17 more years to pass before a new peak is reached.

Hughes says it’s important for them to emphasize energy efficiency while they work to increase power generation.

Hughes says homes need to be air sealed and insulated to retain heat well during the winter, but many old homes have poor air sealing. Hughes says folks who want rebated home energy upgrades can work with a contractor who will submit an invoice to the TVA, and then they will then be contacted to receive their rebate.

Those who are unsure about what energy upgrades their home may need, Hughes says the TVA does free home energy evaluations.
