Kentucky State Police are urging motorists to stay alert and safe this Halloween, as trick-or-treaters and their families will be out on the hunt for snacks and scares.
Troopers says Halloween safety is a group effort between motorists, homeowners, trick-or-treaters and parents, and they’re offering some tips to all of those groups this year. For motorists, they encourage you to be patient and take your route slower than you might usually, and stay alert for the unexpected, as excited kids might dart into the roadway in the rush for candy.
For the parents, hand out glow sticks and reflective gear to the trick-or-treaters, and make sure they’re always clearly visible to drivers, make sure a responsible adult is always present and avoid capes, props or other items that could cause tripping.
Trick-or-treaters are reminded to not cut across people’s yards, make sure you walk and don’t run when crossing the street, and stay very aware for motorists, as someone may not see you and not be able to stop in time.
For the homeowners—turn on your porch light to signal that you’re handing out candy, and keep the walk ways to the door clear of items and well-lit. Keep those pets inside tonight, as they can get scared easily at all those strange ghosts and goblins visiting in the night.
A lot of municipalities are hosting their own trick-or-treating events, but most activities in neighborhoods will get underway right around sundown, so stay safe and warm this Halloween night.
