Defense proposes mediation for Peach Street double-murder case

Double-murder suspect Anthony Gaines appeared in Christian Circuit Court on Wednesday where the commonwealth and the defense discussed evidence and the possibility of mediating the case.

Gaines was arrested in connection to the shooting deaths of Kierra Wallace and George Gomez near Peach Street in 2021. He is charged with two-counts murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with physical evidence and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.

Gaines is represented by Brandi Jones and Michael Colman while Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys Greg Cortese and Mark Gilbert are prosecuting the case.

At their last court date, Colman says they subpoenaed the Hopkinsville Police Department for incident reports and body cam footage and logs which they have not received yet.

However, Cortese says the body cam logs do not relate to the case, but following discussion with Colman he plans look back into any body cam related evidence. Further concerning evidence, Circuit Judge Andrew Self says he is still working on making a ruling on an evidence suppression motion from the defense.

Turning toward mediation, Jones says she has contacted retired Barren County Circuit Judge Phillip Patton, who said he would be interested in helping resolve the case. Cortese says the commonwealth is also interested in organizing mediation.

Mediation is set to occur in early 2025. Gaines will reappear in court on December 18 for a pretrial conference and his trial is set for July 14, 2025.
