Former Colonel named Todd hoops coach

A former Christian County High School basketball star has been named the new Todd County Central High School Head Basketball Coach.

Walter McCombs the Third, who played for Christian County from 2002-06, says he is excited for the opportunity to take over the Rebels.

After graduating from Christian County High School, McCombs went to Western Kentucky University and graduated with a Social Work degree. He got into coaching beginning in Junior Pro when his son began playing.

Seven years ago, he began coaching at the AAU level with the Vette City Thoroughbreds. Although the early days saw the team struggle, under McCombs’ leadership, the Thoroughbreds eventually earned a No. 10 national ranking. It was then he earned the attention of Bowling Green High School Coach D.G. Sherrill.

McCombs credits his playing days under former Christian County coach Kerry Stovall and the last six seasons as an assistant coach for Sherrill, a former Caldwell County star and Hopkinsville High School girls’ basketball coach, for preparing him for the opportunity at Todd Central.

The former Christian County star said he is familiar with the basketball tradition at Todd Central and is proud to be part of the program.

Todd finished 13-16 last year under Russell Malone.

Jonathan Williams has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. He has spent the last three seasons with the Rebels coaching staff.
