Saturday saw the return of the Summer Reading Program to the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library, and they saw droves of participants of all ages show up to sign up.
The kick-off event did move inside due to the rainy weather, but they didn’t stop eager readers from stopping in to enjoy some festive activities, the spirit of competition and finding a good book to start their reading list. Youth Services Director Cheyanne Turner says they had over 300 individuals sign up to take part in Summer Reading, which goes until July 13.
She says they had food, games and plenty of activities for summer readers to enjoy at the kick-off, including a visit from the Hopkinsville Police Department Paw-trol Officer Bolo.
Turner says Summer Reading is all about encouraging literacy in the community through the fun of friendly competition, with prizes awaiting successful readers.
Readers are separated into for categories, including pre-readers—ages zero to four—kids ages five to 12, teens in ages 13 through 17 and then adults. To register for Summer Reading, you can do so on the HCCPL website or at the library itself. The library will have numerous events in celebration of Summer Reading, so stay tuned to their social media outlets for more information.
To track the hours, you read during the Summer Reading Program, color in a box on your reading log for every hour you read. Readers receive a prize bag and a raffle ticket for the first five hours completed and then for every five hours read after that, you will earn a raffle ticket. Prizes will be raffled off at the finale July 13th.
