School Board approves 2024 high school graduation ceremony date

The Christian County School Board voted to set the 2024 high school graduation date for May 17, discussed purchasing network equipment and heard from middle school students about their project for the National History Day competition at Thursday’s workshop meeting.

The Hopkinsville and Christian County High School graduating classes of 2024 will be walking the stage and receiving their diplomas on Friday, May 17. Director of Pupil Personnel, Melanie Barret shared that the graduation will take place at the Stadium of Champions. The Hopkinsville High School graduation ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. and the Christian County High School ceremony will be held at 8:30 p.m.

If the weather is inclement then the graduation will take place in each high school’s gymnasium.

Next, District Technology Director Jason Wilson shared that network switches which are responsible for connecting computers to the same network have not been replaced since 2015 and it was time for to be replaced.

The Board approved purchasing new network switches which will cost around $350,000. However, Wilson says the funds being used for the purchase come from the district’s E-rate Budget which are funds from the state government.

Beyond their discussion and approval matters, the board heard from District Gifted and Talented Teacher Shannon Slate and Christian County Middle School Students Katie West and Charles Hobson about the 2024 National History Day competition.

National History Day in Kentucky is an annual competition where students present on historical topics that they are passionate about. Slate says the event allows them to practice their research skills.

Slate shared that students recently competed in the competition’s regional division and West and Hobson are moving on to the State round of the competition for their project on Dr. Philip C. Brooks. Brooks was an African-American man from Hopkinsville credited with expanding healthcare for Black people in the area by opening his own hospital.

The Board also recognized District Digital Learning Coach, Chris Tyson Renshaw who was named a 2024 KET All Star. Wilson says that as a KET All Star, Renshaw will work with other state educators selected as all stars and share the lesson plans and teaching methods she uses.

Renshaw was one of 21 educators selected as all-stars across the state.
