Legislators talk Road Plan, IVF, school safety

The filing deadline for bills to be filed in the Kentucky General Assembly has passed, with a flurry of bills finding numbers as we head into the back half of the session.

One of those bills filed this week came from Senator Whitney Westerfield of Crofton, who filed a bill to protect IVF in Kentucky in light of a ruling out of Alabama. He says his own children are a blessing from IVF, and he wants to make sure it remains available for families.

A bill was also filed this week—House Bill 711—that would look to make exceptions for victims of rape or incest in regards to Kentucky’s abortion laws, with Westerfield and Representative Walker Thomas saying they do not support measures like that, while Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says he would support those exceptions.

Dossett says they also got a chance to get a look at the Road Plan, with the plan likely to come before the House in the next week or so, and he was pleased to see several local projects included in it.

Representative Walker Thomas spoke on Senate Bill 2, which would allow for veterans and retired police officers to become “Guardians” or School Resource Officers at schools, with the hope of creating safer campuses for students and staff.

Legislators will reconvene in Frankfort on Monday, with less than 20 days left to the regular session, with much left to be done—including the passage of a two-year budget and the Road Plan.
