Special prosecutor appointed in Clearman Court murder case, bond hearing set

There is a new special prosecutor in the murder case against Bobby Spikes, and a hearing to consider bond modification and set a trial date was set in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday.

Ohio County Commonwealth’s Attorney Blake Chambers will serve as special prosecutor in the case where Spikes is accused in the December 2021 fatal shooting of Stanley Bussell on Clearman Court. He is also facing possible indictment in Trigg County in the death of 34-year-old Candace Marcel of Hopkinsville.

Public defender Eric Bearden requested that a date be set to hold a hearing to argue for bond modification, where he intends to also push for a trial date to be set.

Chambers also requested some more time, saying this case is still quite new to him and he needs to speak with the victim’s family and make sure all evidence is in order, so Judge John Atkins set a hearing for February 5.

Spikes expressed frustration, saying he wanted new representation, as he’s been in jail for over two years and things continue to be delayed.

Judge Atkins said his feelings on the matter were understandable, but due to the complicated nature of the case, delays were unavoidable.

Hopkinsville police allege that on December 8, 2021 Spikes and his girlfriend called Bussell to a home on Clearman Court to work on a vehicle and that’s when he fatally shot him in the head.

Bussell’s body wasn’t discovered until Marcel was found dead in an abandoned vehicle on Cerulean Road in Trigg County and a search warrant was served at Marcel’s Clearman Court home.
