It is almost time for little ghosts and goblins to be out in the streets hunting down candy and spooky sights, and Kentucky State Police are putting out some advice on how to stay safe.
According to a news release, both parents, motorists and homeowners all play an important role in keeping trick-or-treaters safe during Halloween and KSP is asking motorists to stay alert for increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic, especially in neighborhoods. Take things a slower than you might usually, as children could dart out into the road if they’re not being careful, especially if they’re excited.
Trick-or-treaters are asked to wear some type of reflective gear if out after dark, especially if costumes are mostly dark—carrying a flashlight or glow sticks is also recommended. Be cautious of strangers, and make sure you have a buddy, whether that be a parent or a sibling, or a group of friends for older children. Don’t cut across people’s yards; stay on the sidewalk where possible.
Homeowners who are handing out candy are asked to turn on their porch lights to help provide light, watch out for flammable decorations and costumes around flames, and keep any pets up in the house to avoid scaring them and potential harm to pets or people.
