MLB Update 7-28-2023

>>Brewers Acquire Carlos Santana From Pirates

(Milwaukee, WI)  — The Brewers are adding a power bat to their lineup.  Milwaukee acquired Carlos Santana from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday in exchange for Jhonny Severino.  The first baseman is hitting .235 this season to go with 12 home runs and 53 RBI.  The 37-year-old is owed about 2.5-million-dollars and will be a free agent at the end of the year.  For Pittsburgh, Severino is a shortstop prospect currently playing the Arizona Complex League.  The 18-year-old hit .268 with 25 RBI in 48 games while playing in the Dominican Summer League in 2022.

>>Marlins Trade For Mets Closer David Robertson

(Miami, FL)  — The Marlins are adding a veteran closer to their bullpen.  Miami acquired David Robertson from the Mets Thursday night in exchange for two prospects.  Robertson has a 2.05 ERA through 44 innings this season and is 14-for-17 in save opportunities.  The 38-year-old took over the ninth-inning role for Edwin Diaz, who was injured during the World Baseball Classic before Opening Day.  New York received 18-year-old infield prospect Marco Vargas and 19-year-old catcher Ronald Hernandez in return for Robertson.  The MLB trade deadline is Tuesday.

>>Angels Sweep Doubleheader With Tigers

(Detroit, MI)  — The Angels swept their doubleheader with the Tigers and it was the Shohei Ohtani show.  Los Angeles topped Detroit 6-0 in Game One.  Ohtani was credited with the victory after striking out eight batters over a one-hit complete game shutout.  He also launched two home runs and drove in three runs as the Angels defeated the Tigers 11-4 in Game Two.

>>Cardinals Get Crushed By Cubs

(St. Louis, MO)  — The Cardinals got knocked around for 14 hits during a 10-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium.  Starter Miles Mikolas recorded just two outs before he was ejected for hitting Ian Happ with a pitch.  Happ had made contract with catcher Willson Contreras during his back-swing earlier in the plate appearance.  Contreras left the game because of the injury.  Mikolas stayed in the game long enough to get charged with his sixth loss, giving up one run in his appearance.  Andrew Knizner had two home runs in the losing effort.  The Cardinals remain in fourth-place in the NL Central at 46-and-58.  Jordan Montgomery starts for St. Louis against Chicago tonight.

>>Reds At Dodgers Tonight

(Los Angeles, CA)  — The Reds are back on the diamond tonight.  The team opens a three-game set against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.  Cincy is coming off a series loss to the Brewers and is second in the NL Central at 56-and-48.  The Reds trail Milwaukee by a game-and-a-half for first place in the division.  LA is leading the NL West with a 58-and-43 record.
