Grand jury returns indictments for assault, wanton endangerment

A Christian County Grand Jury has returned numerous indictments, including relation to recent shooting incidents and abuse reports.

Indicted for first-degree assault, two counts of wanton endangerment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon is 47-year-old Jeffrey Proffitt of Hopkinsville. Proffitt is accused of shooting a female victim in the leg at a residence on Petsch Lane on June 24. She had to be flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

Investigation determined that the victim and Proffitt had reportedly been in an argument when he retrieved a handgun and brandished it while they were arguing. The gun went off, striking the victim in the leg.

Indicted for five counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, receiving stolen property and tampering with physical evidence is 19-year-old Tasean Diuguid of Hopkinsville. The grand jury also indicted 19-year-old Kyan Buckner of Hopkinsville for five counts of complicity to wanton endangerment in the first degree, receiving stolen property and tampering with physical evidence.

The charges stem from a shots fired incident that occurred in the area of East 18th Street and South Virginia Street in May. Investigation into the incident led to a home on Gray Fox Court, where investigators found multiple guns under a back porch and one of the firearms had been reported stolen out of Clarksville. No one was injured in the gunfire.

Thirty-year-old Kevin Stokes of Oak Grove has been indicted for first-degree criminal abuse, first-degree strangulation and first-degree fleeing or evading police. On June 23, Stokes allegedly wrapped his hands around the throat of a four-year-old child, impeding the normal breathing of the child. He is also accused of intentionally abusing the same victim, placing them in a situation that could cause serious physical injury.  He allegedly fled from police on that same day.
