>>Jets Sign Quinnen Williams To Extension

 

(Florham Park, NJ)  — The Jets are locking up one of the top players in their front-seven.  New York has signed defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to a four-year, 96-million-dollar contract extension.  The deal includes 66-million-dollars guaranteed.  The 25-year-old is now the second-highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL.  At 24-million-dollars per season, he surpasses Tennessee’s Jeffery Simmons for the number two spot, behind the Rams’ Aaron Donald.  The Jets selected Williams with the third overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Alabama.

 

>>Northwestern Fires Baseball Coach

 

(Evanston, IL)  — The Wildcats baseball program announced Thursday that head coach Jim Foster has been fired.  An investigation by the University found that Foster engaged in abusive behavior during his tenure with Northwestern.  Foster is the second coach to be fired by Northwestern’s athletics department this week after head football coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired on Monday following an investigation of hazing allegations surrounding his program.  Former White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson is taking over as Northwestern’s next baseball coach.

(North Berwick, Scotland)  — Beyond Hun An is sitting atop the leaderboard after the opening round of the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.  The 31-year-old finished the first round shooting nine under 61.  Davis Riley is in second place at seven under par.  Rory McIlroy and Thomas Detry are tied for third at six under.  Yannik Paul and KH Lee are tied for fifth at five under.  Defending champion Xander Schauffele is even after round one.  Padraig Harrington, Charley Hoffman and Daniel Hillier will be among the first group of players teeing off the second round of the tournament.

 

>>WNBA All-Star Game Set For Saturday

 

(Las Vegas, NV)  — The WNBA All-Star game is getting underway this weekend in Sin City.  Team A’ja Wilson and Team Breanna Stewart will square off tomorrow night at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.  Wilson drafted Aces teammate Chelsea Gray with her first pick in the All-Star draft, while Stewart selected Mercury center Brittney Griner.  Also starting for Team Wilson are Jackie Young, Arike Ogunbowale]] and rookie Aliyah Boston.  Jewell Loyd, Satou Sabally and Nneka Ogwumike round out the starting five for Team Stewart.

 

>>Will Byron Aims To Build Lead On NASCAR Field In Loudon

 

(Loudon, NH)  — Will Byron aims to build his lead in the NASCAR Cup Series standings when the racers battle in Loudon for the Crayon 301.  Byron took home the checkered flag in his Cup Series-leading fourth win of the season last weekend in the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.  The driver of the number-24 car has a 21-point lead over Martin Truex Jr. for the top spot in the standings.  Kyle Busch, Christopher Bell and Ross Chastain round out the top five.  The green flag waves from New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday.

(London)  — Semifinals action continues at Wimbledon.  Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz and third-seeded Daniil Medvedev are slated to square off, while four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner meet in the semis.  On the women’s side, Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to reach the finals since Billie Jean King in 1963.  Vondrousova defeated Elina Svitolina in straight sets, while sixth-seeded Ons Jabeur downed second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka to reach the finals.  Jabeur lost to Elena Rybakina in last year’s Wimbledon final.
