Two suspects in 2021 shooting case are heading to trial

Two men charged in connection with a shooting incident that happened after a party at the Princess Theater in November of 2021 are heading to trial.

Hopkinsville police charged Jaquavian Spencer with first-degree assault after he had been accused of shooting Zamarius Humphries in the neck after Humphries allegedly pointed a gun at him. They have now signed affidavits denying that account of the story, with defense attorney Sands Chewning saying both men say they did not shoot at each other.

Chewning requested in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday that they be released from an ankle monitor while waiting for trial.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen says their alleged actions of firing gunshots at each other is what ultimately lead to the death of a bystander that evening, when Deovion Day began shooting in response.

Day is charged in the murder of Aniyah Collins, who was in her car attempting to leave the area. His gunfire also hit 30-year old Gteria Acree, who was in a parking lot at the corner of East Eighth and Virginia Street. Acree had to be treated at a local hospital.

Judge Andrew Self denied the request for release, saying Spencer is already set for trial and they can set Humphries for a similar date.

Trial was set for Humphries to begin on August 17, while Spencer’s trial is set for August 10. Humphries is currently charged with attempted first-degree assault and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
