Details released in Bypass and Canton Pike collision

Details have been released about a two-vehicle collision involving a dump truck at the Bypass and Canton Pike that sent a Cerulean woman to a Nashville hospital.

According to the Hopkinsville Police Department report, the accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when a dump truck that was hauling asphalt failed to stop at a red light and continued through the intersection, striking a van that was driven by 62-year-old Kathy Chewning of Cerulean.

The passenger vehicle went approximately 45 yards off of the roadway, while the dump truck overturned, spilling asphalt onto the Bypass.

The driver of the dump truck, 53-year-old Dwight Cotton of St. Charles, Kentucky, told officers he had tried to brake but was unable to stop in time. Investigation determined the tires of the dump truck were worn down severely before the collision occurred.

Chewning was transported to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.  Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt.
