Plea deal reached in jailhouse assault case

A plea agreement was reached Wednesday morning in Christian Circuit Court for a Mayfield man who had been charged with first-degree assault at the Christian County Jail.

Officials at the jail charged 39-year old Cortes Thornton with the felony assault count last year after he wrapped an electronic tablet in some type of cloth and used it to assault another inmate, causing injuries that required surgery.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen outlined the plea agreement Wednesday in circuit court, noting the charge is amended down to assault under extreme emotional disturbance and it comes with a one-year sentence.

Judge John Atkins agreed to waive formal sentencing and proceeded to sentence Thornton to one-year of incarceration as he was already in jail on unrelated charges in Graves County.

Thornton is represented locally by public defender Doug Moore.
