Quarles, Shell make campaign stops in Hopkinsville

Two Republicans running for statewide office made a stop Thursday morning in Hopkinsville.

Gubernatorial hopeful Ryan Quarles, who’s the current commissioner of agriculture, was at the James E. Bruce Center for the Salute to Agriculture Breakfast and says his campaign for the GOP nomination is going well.

Two other front-runners in the primary—Kelly Craft and Daniel Cameron—have been exchanging barbs in recent days, but Quarles says he’s focused on his own campaign.

Auditor Mike Harmon and Somerset Mayor Alan Keck are also thought to be contenders for the right to face incumbent Democrat Andy Beshear in the general election.

Meanwhile, former state representative Jonathan Shell is hoping to succeed Quarles as agriculture commissioner and says he has the needed experience on and off the farm.

He says he’ll try to be the ‘voice of rural Kentucky’ if elected.

Shell is facing state Representative Richard Heath of Mayfield in the GOP primary.
