Special prosecutor to be appointed in Clearman Court murder

A special prosecutor is being appointed in the murder case of Bobby Spikes, the suspect in the December 2021 fatal shooting of Stanley Bussell on Clearman Court.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen told the court Wednesday morning she expects the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office to appoint a special prosecutor soon and then that person and the defense can work to schedule a new trial date.

Spikes spoke up on his own behalf and asked Judge John Atkins to allow him to fire public defender Doug Moore and to appoint someone else, adding he’s already filed a complaint against Moore alleging inadequate representation.

Judge Atkins said he’ll let Spikes’ complaint play out through the administrative process and scheduled another hearing for April 5.

Hopkinsville police allege that on December 8, 2021 Spikes and his girlfriend called Bussell to a home on Clearman Court to work on a vehicle and that’s when he fatally shot him in the head.

Bussell’s body wasn’t discovered until 34-year old Candace Marcel of Hopkinsville was found dead in an abandoned vehicle on Cerulean Road in Trigg County and a search warrant was served at Marcel’s Clearman Court home.

Spikes and Marcel had been in some type of relationship and had once lived together, though they were no longer sharing a home, according a detective who testified at a hearing in December of 2021.

Kentucky State Police continue to investigate Marcel’s death and no one has been charged in her murder.
